How to make dreadlocks

Creating dreadlocks is not as difficult as you think in fact it’s quite simple and if you naturally have curly hair then your hair will naturally dread anyway, all you need is the tools of the trade and patience because it takes a while you can get dreadlock kits online but they are pricey plus this way works just as best and is cheaper so I’m going to explain how you can transform your normal hair to dreadlocked hair in just a few short steps. All u need is a nit comb that you can pick up from all supermarkets pound shops pharmacy’s and you purchase the Dax wax from boots, Superdrug or any mass supermarkets. There are many kinds of Dax wax, it’s the red tin I used for mine and many of my friends have used this 2 so that’s the tin that you need to make your dreadlocks. This wax is very sticky strong and works perfect for keeping your dreads in place, it costs no more than a fiver. When u have got these two products what you need to do is to part your hair into little sections, you can be as neat as you want or as scruffy as you want entirely your choice, my personal opinion is to have them not to thick maybe 1 or 2 cm thick.

Ok so this is what you need to do:

  • Section your hair as you make the dreads same as if you was braiding your hair and it will make it easier for you if you was to ask someone to help do this because the back of your hair will be a little difficult for you to do on your own so a second pair of hands will make it easier.
  • Secondly, once hair is sectioned to thickness you want it get the nit comb and back comb to the roots as tight to the roots as you can get, then get pulling and twisting your section into a nice back combed section of hair, don’t just leave it in a clump of knots. repeat till you think its knotted enough then apply a small piece of Dax wax not too much as its very sticky then rub into the section that you have back combed just so the dread don’t come apart it acts like a glue for a couple of weeks to keep it in then what happens is the first time you wash your dreads the wax begins to come out and your dread stays where it is and the stickiness from the Dax wax will disappear after a few washes you need to repeat this until your whole head is dreaded.

  • Once you have done this your hair should look like dreads and feel a bit sticky but don’t worry about this as this will eventually disappear after washing but it’s very important that you do not get your hair wet at all for 2 weeks!

So it’s been 2 weeks and it’s now time to wash your dreads.
There is so many types of shampoos you can use and the more mature your dreads become you can wash them every day so here is a list below of

How to make dreadlocks: shampoo types:

  • There are many different types of shampoos out there for those of us who sport a dreadlocked hair style.
  • You may have seen different dreadlock shampoo products online or in a beauty supply shop or other hair product retailers. These shampoos have ingredients that are made to help speed up the locking process. Check link below for the products if you wish to use the dreadlock products
  • But standard, mass market shampoos may also work well to help shampoo dreadlocks and keep them clean.
  • You can find shampoos in the following formats
  • Soap shampoo, bar shampoo and the best thing about bar shampoo is that it's basically super concentrated liquid shampoo so the water has been sucked out of it and shaped into a soap bar! How to make Dreadlocks get lots of natural organic treats with this bar as well! Places to get this are LUSH or herbal shops follow links below for places to get this bar shampoo.

Liquid shampoo:

  • Shampoo is the easiest to find and the one that most people are familiar with using.
  • After washing your dreadlocks is to dry each dread carefully to begin with until they become more mature and then it don’t matter how ruff you are.

Keeping them tidy

To keep your dreads tidy you need to do a little maintenance. So when you think it’s necessary maintenance is required making sure that when your hair grows it’s not going to grow into a natural dread you have to backcomb your roots as it grows otherwise it be normal hair then dread not a good look! Then the other thing is to get a small pair of scissors I found nail scissors best and that’s to snip wispy bits that come away from the dread so snipping them off will make your dread look smooth.

I will stress that it’s important that you only wash your dreads once a week maybe leave it a little longer just until your dreads are quite mature then you can wash them every day if you wanted and this is only after the 2 weeks that you have before you can wash them. Hope this has provided you with the advice you need and hope that the links will help you to!
